SCL Sports Lighting Upgrades Wuhan Wutaizha Stadium with a Multi-Level Sports Lighting Solution

A sports lighting renewal project designed to support professional competitions, training, and community recreation across a multi-sport facility.

Located in Wuchang District, Wuhan, China, Wuhan Wutaizha Stadium is a long-standing sports venue with a rich history of community use. As part of the area's urban renewal, the facility has undergone a comprehensive upgrade, transforming it into a modern multi-sport complex serving a wider range of sporting activities.

SCL Sports Lighting contributed to this transformation with a sports lighting solution tailored to the different requirements of the venue's indoor and outdoor facilities.

A Revitalized Sports Complex for Multiple Activities

The upgraded complex goes beyond a traditional athletics track and football pitch. It now accommodates a diverse range of sporting facilities, including an outdoor athletics track and football field, indoor tennis, badminton and basketball venues, as well as outdoor tennis courts, clay tennis courts, basketball courts and pickleball courts.

With outdoor facilities supporting evening activities and indoor venues available for all-weather use, the complex requires a lighting system capable of serving different sports, operating schedules and levels of competition.

This diversity called for a carefully planned lighting strategy rather than a uniform approach across every court and field.

A Multi-Level Lighting Strategy for Different Sports

SCL Sports Lighting developed the lighting design around the intended use of each facility, following applicable Chinese sports lighting standards and considering the practical requirements of individual sports.

The indoor basketball, tennis and badminton venues, together with the outdoor football and tennis facilities, were designed to meet professional competition-level lighting requirements. The outdoor basketball and pickleball courts were configured for recreational competition and professional training.

This differentiated approach helps each facility achieve its intended performance level without applying the same lighting specification indiscriminately across the entire complex.

Different sports also place different demands on visual performance. Football requires effective illumination across a large playing area, while tennis and badminton require players to track fast-moving balls through the air. For these sports, vertical illuminance and lighting uniformity are important considerations alongside horizontal illumination.

By accounting for these differences during the design stage, the project aims to provide clear visual conditions for athletes while matching the lighting investment to each facility's actual use.

Glare Control and Spill Light Management in an Urban Environment

Located in a built-up urban area close to residential neighborhoods, Wutaizha Stadium also presented an important challenge: delivering effective sports lighting while limiting unwanted light beyond the playing areas.

The lighting design incorporates controlled beam distribution and precise fixture aiming to help manage spill light and reduce glare. These measures are particularly important for sports in which players frequently look upward to follow the ball.

The system also uses efficient LED sports light sources and luminaires with high protection ratings, supporting energy-conscious operation and reliable use in outdoor environments. Together, these considerations help address both the immediate visual needs of athletes and the longer-term operational demands of the facility.

Supporting Sports Participation and Long-Term Venue Use

For an established sports venue undergoing renovation, lighting is more than a technical upgrade. It can influence how effectively facilities support organized competition, structured training and everyday public recreation.

At Wutaizha Stadium, the differentiated lighting approach supports a broader range of activities within one complex, from professional-level sporting events to youth training and community fitness. It also allows individual facilities to be configured according to their intended function, helping avoid unnecessary over-lighting where a lower performance level is appropriate.

The project illustrates an important principle in sports lighting design: the goal is not simply to make every venue brighter, but to provide the right lighting for each sport, playing environment and level of use.
