For a comprehensive sports center, lighting is far more than simply illuminating the playing area. It directly affects the quality of competitions, the experience of athletes and spectators, and the long-term operation of the venue.

A professional sports lighting system must meet the technical requirements of different sports while also providing a comfortable, healthy, and energy-efficient environment for daily public activities.

As one of the key supporting facilities for the 16th Gansu Provincial Games, Dingxi National Fitness Center covers a total construction area of 27,900 square meters, including a swimming pool, basketball hall, outdoor basketball courts, and supporting functional areas.

Designed as a Grade B sports facility, the center serves both professional sporting events and daily fitness activities for local residents.

Unlike single-purpose sports venues, comprehensive sports centers face a greater lighting challenge: each sport requires a different optical environment and lighting solution.

Project Requirements and Design Objectives

As a major venue for the Gansu Provincial Games, Dingxi National Fitness Center needed to balance two key functions:

• Meeting professional competition and broadcasting standards;
• Providing a comfortable and high-quality lighting environment for everyday sports activities.

To achieve this goal, SCL Sports Lighting was responsible for the complete sports lighting system design and product supply across the venue.

The lighting solutions covered five major areas:

• Swimming competition area;

• Indoor basketball hall;
• Outdoor rooftop basketball court.

01 Swimming Pool Lighting: Creating Precise Harmony Between Water and Light

The swimming pool was designed according to Grade B medium-sized venue standards. Due to the reflective characteristics of water surfaces and the requirements of underwater visibility, swimming pool lighting requires more precise optical control compared with conventional indoor sports facilities.

For the competition area, training area, and spectator seating, SCL provided professional LED sports lighting solutions optimized for swimming environments.

Through advanced optical design and optimized installation angles, the system effectively reduces reflected glare from the water surface, preventing visual interference for swimmers.

High color rendering performance ensures that key visual details, including lane markings and turning indicators, remain clear and recognizable.

During critical moments such as starts, turns, and finishes, athletes can maintain accurate visual judgment without being affected by lighting conditions.

The spectator lighting system adopts independent zoning control, ensuring clear viewing conditions while preventing unnecessary light interference with the pool area.

02 Basketball Hall Lighting: Consistent and Comfortable Full-Court Illumination

The indoor basketball hall covers an area of 2,153.50 square meters.

Due to the fast pace and high-intensity movement of basketball, athletes frequently move across the entire court. Therefore, consistent illumination and visual stability are essential.

The primary lighting requirement was to achieve uniform illumination across the entire playing area, avoiding uneven brightness changes that could affect players’ spatial awareness and distance judgment.

Through precise optical distribution and scientific lighting layout, SCL created a balanced lighting environment with:

• Uniform horizontal illuminance;
• Reduced dark areas and excessive brightness differences;
• Improved visual tracking during high-speed movement.

The high color rendering LED lighting system enhances ball visibility and improves players’ ability to follow movement trajectories accurately.

For the rooftop outdoor basketball court, covering 607.6 square meters, SCL considered both daily public use and surrounding environmental requirements.

Without ceiling structures for supplementary lighting, the outdoor court relies entirely on directional projection from lighting fixtures.

Through secondary optical design, SCL achieved accurate light distribution, ensuring effective coverage of the playing area while controlling glare and light spill.

This provides a high-quality sports lighting environment while minimizing impact on surrounding areas.

03 Volleyball Hall Lighting: Precise Control of Vertical Illumination

The volleyball hall at Dingxi National Fitness Center served as a competition venue for the 16th Gansu Provincial Games.

Volleyball requires athletes to frequently look upward to track the ball trajectory above the net. Therefore, vertical illuminance and glare control are critical factors in volleyball lighting design.

SCL optimized fixture mounting height and projection angles to ensure sufficient and uniform vertical illumination around the net area.

At the same time, strict glare control helps athletes maintain clear vision when tracking high-speed volleyball movements.

With high color rendering performance, the volleyball gains stronger contrast against the background, supporting accurate visual judgment during key actions such as passing, setting, and spiking.
